Italy: Bad Economy Helps Smoking Control

When government control alone cannot restrict smoking, the economic crisis might be able to lend a hand.
While pushing forward its anti-smoking process by legal force, the Italian government also gets unexpected help from the country's economic recession.
According to the report released by the Italian Ministry of Health, the country's smoking population has reached 10.8 million, accounting for 20.8 percent of the total population.
That number showed a 2 percent decrease compared to last year, marking the first decline in 6 years.
The Italian government has been committed to creating a smoke-free culture, which is considered to be a promotion on no-smoking awareness.
"The most important legislative action in Italy on tobacco control in more than 20 years is to ban the advertising both direct and indirect, and prohibit smoking in public places where second-hand smoke can be passed to nonsmokers. It's an important law to introduce the culture of smoke-free and to protect the health of non smokers."
The escalating economic crisis that is swirling Italy has also dragged some people out of smoking.
An average Italian smoker spends 30 euros a week on cigarettes, but that money gets cut during this difficult time.
SOUNDBITE: ROBERTA PACIFICI, ITALIAN MINISTRY OF HEALTH:?
"The crisis has reduced the number of smokers and the number of cigarettes consumed per day because the daily expenses have been diminished."
